Life lessons we learnt from Friends

Most of us have heard about ‘Friends’. Even if you don’t watch all 10 series on a continuous loop (guilty) you’re bound to have at least seen a gif or screen-snap doing the rounds on social media.

The iconic show taught us many things; unagi, the importance being someones lobster, how to lose your apartment in a bet…

Hilarious mishaps aside, Friends actually gave us some pretty important life lessons. Honestly I could be sat here all day talking about it and giving endless examples, so I’ll try to keep this short…

Go for it.

Really what have you got to lose? Rachel left a man at the alter and went to find an old friend, not having a clue what she might find. However, after ending up with her dream job, great friends and a happy ending it proves that risks can pay off. This is just one of many examples the show throws at us. Whether it’s a job, love, friendship etc, it’s worth taking a shot and just going for it!

Be honest.

Telling the truth, especially if you know it’ll hurt someone, can be a hard thing to face. But most of the time it is better to own up to your mistakes and be honest. You don’t want to do a Ross and run round New York trying to stop someone hearing bad news. It’s better that the truth comes from you.

You don’t have to have it all figured out.

It’s normal to look at everyone around you and think that they have their lives completely together. Chances are they don’t, what you are see is just the image they want you to see. Right at the start of Friends, Rachel thought the others had it together when they didn’t really. You don’t have to have a plan and you don’t have to know where you’re going. And that’s okay! Not many people do.

Be a good neighbour.

If it looks like the ugly naked guy you and your mates watch isn’t breathing, check they are still alive.

It doesn’t matter what people think, as long as you’re happy.

It’s probably best to look at Phoebe for this one. After an unhappy childhood I think Phoebe truly deserved every happiness. Her confidence to be herself despite what others thought is what made her happy, and her friends all supported her in this. She wasn’t ashamed or embarrassed to be herself, and that’s what made her such an inspiration.

What is and isn’t an emergency.

Being out of Doritos is an emergency. What more do you need to know?

The importance of having good friends.

Fairly obvious, given the title of the show. But it’s a life lesson we learnt! Your friends are the family you chose for yourself. True friends are the ones you can really count on to support you throughout the good and the bad, even if that means advising you against certain things (and watching you do the stupid thing anyway). There are far too many examples of this to name, but at the end of the day there haven’t been many truer sentences than: “I’ll be there for you, cause you’re there for me too.”

Sometimes you do just need a hug.

We saw plenty of them throughout the 10 series. No matter what situation, you really can’t go wrong with a good hug. It really can help to make you feel better about most things.

Pay the delivery fee on your furniture

We all scrimp on things we possibly shouldn’t so that we can save a some cash. It might be worth to occasionally pay a little extra for delivery to save getting your brand new furniture stuck in a stairwell. If you really can’t afford it though? I suppose you ought to pivot…

We all make mistakes.

We’ve all been known to say the wrong thing, or handle a situation badly. Hindsight is always a wonderful thing. But there is no use holding grudges and making things worse for yourself. Own up to your mistakes, and do what you can to fix them. Even if that means sitting in a box for hours to prove how much you value your friendship (Joey had his reasons.) And the best part of making mistakes? Being able to laugh about them later with your friends.

The importance of grammar.

‘Your’ and ‘you’re’ mean completely different things.

If all else fails though?

Have a Friends marathon.

At this point I could sit and recite the episodes line by line, but it is the one TV show I never get bored of. No matter what mood I’m in it is guaranteed to make me laugh. And quite frankly the best life lesson I learnt from Friends is that it is the perfect remedy for feeling ill, being stressed, being upset, the list goes on…

“No-one told you life was gonna be this way,” but Friends reminds us that it doesn’t really matter where life takes you, as long as you have coffee and good friends.

  1. I started watching Friends a week ago and am already on Season 2. I kinda wish I had watched it a few years ago so I would’ve known some of their “life lessons” sooner, but oh well. It’s a great show.
